What is the idea behind SiteRookies.com?
Often times when we jump into new areas of interest, new jobs, even new relationships, there is usually a learning curve. Much of what we want and need to know is a mystery, and it can often be difficult to learn the subject "on the fly". We think it's pretty safe to say the setting up a website for the first time falls into that category. For the most part, new web site owners can be overwhelmed by everything that a new site requires as far as getting it online, let alone the building process. Our goal? Make it easier to understand.
We also know that, when a new site owner does an online search for how to set up a website, most of the information they find is pretty anemic, and often shows something like the following:
- 1. Build your site. There are many ways to do this, but you'll need your files when you set up your website.
- 2. Get a domain name for your site. Domain names can usually be registered for about $10.00 a year.
- 3. Set up a hosting account. A good basic host is about $5.00 per month.
- 4. Transfer your files to your hosting account. You're done!
Well that's really helpful, isn't it? Too bad many don't go into areas like how to select a domain name, the terms of using them, what hosting companies are, how to select a good one, the hosting features you may need, setting up and testing your files, etc. No, most other references just assume you'll figure it all out within a few minutes and be all set. We decided to make it easier for you. The overall goal of our site is to show the beginning web site owner a comprehensive guide on how to set up their website, in easy to understand language. No geek speak, no rocket science terminology, no unreadable charts. Just a simple understanding of what is what, what to look for, and how to do what you need to do.
One thing to understand about our website is that we don't teach you how to build your website. Our "Build It" section covers areas like how websites can be made, what goes into them, optimization and best practices to follow whether you build your own web site or have a developer do it for you, but we don't offer tutorials and lessons on the site building process itself. There are already many great tutorial sites out there that can teach you how to build a website. Our focus is the area of getting your website online, in a manner that is understandable to you. Along with using language that is understandable, we include images and videos to help explain many areas that we cover. Videos can often be a great method to follow when learning something new, and we're more than happy to provide them to help you gain a better understanding of what is happening.
Our site is the culmination of knowledge by many people, who you can learn a little more about here, and they all understand what you, the new site owner, may be going through in setting up your first website. Their combined knowledge covers every aspect of getting online, and we even include a marketing area for getting your web site into the search engines, promotion and advertising, and getting visitors to your site.
Overall, we hope we meet our goal of helping you set up your first web site, and making it as easy as possible. If we can do better, please let us know. If we've helped you along the way, please let us know that, as well.
